Vitamin D and Diabetes

Sun exposure is a tricky thing. No one wants too much, of course, but too little can also be a problem. That's because sunshine encourages skin cells to produce vitamin D, a substance that keeps bones strong and may play an as yet undetermined role in warding off a variety of other ailments.
There was a time when lack of vitamin D was a problem only for people living in the far north, where months could go by with no more than a few hours of weak light a day. For the rest of the world, simply spending time outside was sufficient to keep the blood's D levels healthfully high. "In the right location, less than half an hour outside can give you all the vitamin D you need for a week," says Susan Harris, DSc, a researcher at Tufts University.

But these days—between office jobs, television, long commutes, and, of course, sunblock—regular sun exposure is hard to come by. "It wasn't till industrialization that we started spending all of our time inside," says Harris. "Now … we depend more on dietary sources [of vitamin D], of which there are few—and most of us don't get enough." Fortified foods like milk and cereal, in addition to fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, can make up for some of what we’re missing, but most of us also need either appropriate sun exposure or vitamin D supplements.
In addition, some people have a harder time producing vitamin D than others. "Skin pigment acts as a natural sunscreen—it protects the skin, but also reduces vitamin D production," Harris says. The darker your skin, in other words, the harder it is to get enough vitamin D, one reason African Americans seem to have lower levels of D than other Americans. In fact, in a 2004 study published in the journal Diabetes Care, University of Auckland researcher Robert Scragg showed that non-Hispanic blacks in the United States had significantly lower levels of vitamin D than whites and Hispanics. Scragg showed that high vitamin D levels were associated with low diabetes risk—for some. "In that study, the protective effect of vitamin D is seen in Caucasians, but not in non-Hispanic blacks," Harris says.
Harris is one of a growing number of scientists examining the role of vitamin D in the body. While it has long been known to influence skeletal health, over the past two decades more and more researchers have begun to appreciate the many other roles vitamin D may have. "People have gone from looking at deficiency diseases like scurvy and rickets"—afflictions caused by the lack of vitamins C and D, respectively—"to looking at more subtle deficiency effects," Harris says.
It turns out that there are vitamin D receptors almost everywhere in the human body—even in the islets of Langerhans, the structures in the pancreas that produce insulin. For people with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, it seems that vitamin D allows the body to secrete more insulin. At the same time, there's evidence that vitamin D may increase insulin sensitivity.

With the help of a grant from the American Diabetes Association, Harris is taking a closer look at whether vitamin D supplements might in fact help African Americans avoid developing diabetes. She has set up a study examining the links between vitamin D and diabetes in about 100 African Americans age 40 and older. To research people at high risk for developing diabetes, she specifically recruited subjects who were overweight or obese but not diabetic. Half of them are given a placebo, half a vitamin D supplement; over the course of 12 weeks, she measures things like insulin secretion, glucose control, and insulin resistance in the two groups to see if taking vitamin D supplements makes any difference.
Pinning down exactly what makes vitamin D work is made even tougher by related factors: "confounders," in academic jargon. Take, for example, the links between vitamin D levels and diabetes. Are people with high levels of vitamin D less likely to develop diabetes because of the vitamin D, or because their lifestyle gets them out of the house or office? "It's hard to know if it was the vitamin D. The same things that affect vitamin D, like being outside, can affect health in other ways," Harris says. "Maybe it wasn't because of vitamin D; it was because they were more active." To avoid confounding her results, Harris didn't ask participants to change their lifestyle in any way.
If it turns out that vitamin D supplements can help prevent type 2 diabetes in African Americans, it wouldn't necessarily mean it's a universal panacea. "But if we see an association here, I would absolutely want to repeat the study with other groups," Harris says. The ways in which vitamin D works remain a mystery, but that doesn't bother Harris. "Vitamin D is big," she says. For now, she just wants to know whether vitamin D can help people; figuring out why can come later.

Bearing in mind that study took place at latitude 36 and used 4000iu/D3 daily it is to be hoped that Susan Harris will ensure that 25(OH)D is raised in her study subjects to an equivalent level with an effective intake of D3.
It sometimes takes amounts between 5000~7000iu/daily to achieve levels above 50ng/ml at higher latitudes in the Northern hemisphere.

that up to 10,000iu/daily is a safe option even in places where ample sunshine is regularly avaiable.
It's also worth bearing in mind that it generally takes around 6000iu/daily before human breast milk flows replete with D3.
It's not for nothing that human skin generates 10,000~20,000iu very quickly given full body sun exposure.

But bear in mind the calculator is for just 1000iu and 5000iu/daily only meets our daily needs. To build a reserve of D3 to deal with inflammation effectively requires a higher daily intake.
Vitamin D and Diabetes
Great article! I ran across this article that had solid references documenting a preventative role vitamin D plays in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The article stated: "children given a Vitamin D supplement were found 30% less likely to develop type 1 diabetes than those who were not." This is from this Vitamin D article.
I always knew that vitamin D
I always knew that vitamin D has a good effect on osteoporosis, our body use it to process and absorb calcium and phosphorus, but i didn't know that it can be used in preventing and also treating diabetes. I heard that vitamin D supplements have preventive effects on some types of cancer as well. I guess this is another good reason for us to spend more time in the sun.
VITAMIN D3 RESULTS
My doctor put me on a weekly dose of just 5000iu of D3 and within a month I have felt a great diminish of pain from my fibromyalgia, and my blood glucose is better controlled as well.

D definitely is helping me
I had never heard about this corelation between Vitamin D and diabetes and insulin.
I know that whenever I get any type of illness in my body that my sugars go up immediately even though I might not show symptoms for 3 to 7 days. Having diabetes most of my lifetime this has always been an indicator that something is up and to watch carefully my insulin levels and eating habits and who I am around (like I don't want to be around young babies or my grandchildren if I am "coming down with something". And always it has been correct (with exception of infection I had in heart and teeth and no indication except I couldn't get my numbers down and they kept growing. Everytime I had to take medicine for dental work (because I've had rheumatic fever five times) I noticed my need for as much insulin decreased tremendously. (infection gone and so was need for more insulin during illness timeframe)
Recently though, my sugar levels had been where I had to take 90units of insulin a day (Lantus 45u 2xdaily 12hrs apart from each)) plus sliding scale plus 4units of Novalog. Could not get my sugars under 185 to 220 upon waking readings. Then a doctor decided to test my Vitamin D levels to see if a lot of problems I had (muscle crampings, feeling like bones hurt, sometimes bones didn't want to support me when walking etc) were due to Vitamin D levels and they found me very deficient in Vitamin D. My regular doctor and endocrynologist both agreed to have me take D supplements 2 times a week for 4 weeks then once a week for 4 weeks, etc. and I started taking this 5 days ago and before 24 hrs was up my insulin need decreased from this 90units daily plus Novalog to where I was having problems even keeping my levels up and had to decrease dramatically the evening dosage each day and not even use anymore than the sliding scale amount, and it is 2 days before a week is up and I have had to cut out the Lantus in evening completely and way it is looking I may be going to have to reduce the first Lantus dose too.
The change in my body just from taking the Vitamin D is tremendous. Where it ends up is unknown as to amount I will need or even if I will need to continue taking the liquid insulin. I had previously been on Actos, Amaryl and Januvia but because I would have low blood sugars more than once a week I had to stop taking the Amaryl 3 weeks before I started adding this Vitamin D to my system; so when I started on this Vitamin D I was only on Actos and Januvia plus Lantus and Novolog.
Of course I have always followed my diabetic diet, watching carbs etc.
Just wanted you to know. I am white, live SW Ohio, don't get out a lot due to a lot of pain, am post menopausal and 63yrs of age (not sure if you need this info or not but most doctors aske me those things).

I've read about the source of vitamin D and I knew the sunshine stimulates the specific gland which produces vitamin D so we can absorb enough sunshine to create the vitamin and keep the skin fit but after reading an expert's view I've got more. Vitamin D for blood glucose control aid
