Watch the Dementia Medications
Older people with diabetes have an increased risk of being hospitalized when they take antipsychotic medications, reports a study of more than 13,800 men and women age 66 and up. Researchers found that seniors on antipsychotic medications—which are increasingly being prescribed to treat symptoms of dementia—were much more likely to be hospitalized due to high blood glucose, especially at the start of treatment, compared with a group that had been off the meds for more than 180 days. The researchers say the finding is reason to pay special attention to blood glucose levels while taking these meds.
