Learning to Overcome Fear

The health benefits of exercise are well documented, yet more than 60 percent of people with type 1 diabetes are inactive. The reason, say Canadian researchers, is that many fear hypoglycemia. In a new study, they also found that about half of the study subjects had no knowledge of how the body uses insulin—and that those with the greatest knowledge were the least likely to fear exercise-induced hypoglycemia. The researchers conclude that knowledge about ways to prevent hypoglycemia may empower people with type 1 diabetes to become more active—and healthier.
