Exercise in the Workplace Pays Off

Workplace workouts seem to be a win-win for both employees and the boss. In the year following a six-month work-site wellness program at a company in the New Orleans area, participants had medical costs about half those of employees who didn’t take part. Those insurance savings translated into a sixfold return on the employer’s investment. In addition to exercise, the program stressed nutrition, smoking cessation, and general health measures. Workers got a bonus, too: improvements in stress levels, blood fats, and blood pressure.
