Eat and See
Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans over the age of 60; predicting and preventing the disease remains a challenge. According to a study, however, diet may be key in avoiding macular degeneration. Older adults answered questions about their diets and then were tested for the eye disease over the next several years. The researchers found that people with diets rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and foods with a low glycemic index (those that don’t cause blood glucose levels to spike) were less likely to get macular degeneration. Further study will be needed to confirm these results.
