Smart Snacking

Making between-meal eating count
By Robyn Webb, MS, LN

It may seem like a bad idea to eat small snacks during the day when you’re trying to lose weight or keep your blood glucose steady, but the opposite is often true. That is, if you’re smart about snacking. Vending machine fare like chips and cookies may satisfy an immediate craving, but they won’t keep you full for long. (And reaching the point of fullness with junk food is going to cost you a lot of calories, fat, and sugar.) Not only that, but many packaged snack foods are high in carbohydrates, which will raise your blood glucose between meals.

The smarter option: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. They’ll fill you up on fewer calories without causing major blood glucose spikes. In fact, eating foods like these can stop you from being too hungry at your next meal. Just keep an eye on carbs and calories. The best part? You can make most snacks ahead of time, so healthy eating is as easy as grab and go.

The Idea

Snacks don’t have to be synonymous with junk food. A good snack when you’re managing diabetes is almost like a mini meal: a combination of low-fat or nonfat protein and complex carbohydrates.

The Tips

Freeze It
One of the easiest snacks to make and keep in the house is frozen fruit. Grapes are the classic example: Choose a seedless variety and freeze them in a plastic bag until solid. You can cube a mango and freeze it the same way. Or try this: Stick a peeled small banana in a plastic bag and freeze it overnight until solid. Remove it from the freezer and allow it to soften for 5 minutes. Wrap a napkin around the bottom and eat the banana like an ice pop.

With a little more effort, you can have Banana Soft Serve: Slice the frozen banana and place it in a blender or food processor with half a cup of plain nonfat yogurt or nonfat ricotta cheese, plus a dash of no-calorie sweetener. Blend and serve.

Spread It
Spreads are a simple way of combining two foods (usually, something “proteiny” and something “carby”) into one great snack. A typical choice might be a couple of tablespoons of hummus spread over celery stalks, endive leaves, or zucchini spears. You can use nut butters the same way.

Or try our Graham Sandwich: Spoon 2 tablespoons of sugar-free, reduced-fat frozen yogurt (your choice of flavor) onto 1 square graham cracker. Top with another graham cracker, and press down lightly. Eat immediately.

Dip It
If you’ve only ever had onion dip, you’re in for a treat with these two ideas. Veggies and fruit never had it so good!

Ricotta & Strawberries: Mix together 2 tablespoons nonfat ricotta cheese with half a teaspoon of honey and half a teaspoon of mini chocolate chips. Serve with a half cup of halved strawberries.

Greek Yogurt Dip: Mix 1 cup of plain nonfat Greek-style yogurt with half a teaspoon each of ground cumin, coriander, and chili powder, one-eighth teaspoon of ground ginger, 2 tablespoons of lime juice, and 1 teaspoon of honey. Serve with raw or blanched vegetables such as cauliflower and carrots or with 1 ounce of baked pita chips.

banana snack

There are far too many carbs in this snack. The other receipes are also poor diabetic choices, as well having too high fat content. These are disappointing suggestions in my opinion.
Beverly Bronfman, PhD

Most of these choices

I agree most of these snacks seem overly sweet and more carbs then they are stating. I personally woundnt eat these :( DMI 20yrs

???

The Graham sandwich has 2 grams of fat per serving.....the other 3 have less than 1 gram of fat per serving. All of the snacks presented are 2 carb servings or less....

The other recipes shown have 4 grams of fat or less per serving and none exceed 2 carb servings/exchanges per serving of the recipe.

Seems ok (??)

I am confused... 21 g of

I am confused... 21 g of sugar in ONE SERVING of Banana Soft Serve... Seriously, Is this American Diabetes Association website? Can you do better?

Seriously, when teaching

Seriously, when teaching the general population we need to offer them healthier choices so they are more compliant. These are healthy choices, they will satisfy and get them away from the sugar and non healthy choices. We need to help them choose a healthy lifestyle not make it so they feel they have no choice to foods that have good flavor. With time and suggestions like this we will see them feel better and begin moving toward even healthier choices. Portion control is more the direction we need to move.

snack with 21 g of sugar.

When will ADA join the 21st Century? Your reply says "these are healthy choices, they will satisfy and get them away from sugar..." but the Banana smoothie has 21 grams of sugar! Don't you see something inconsistent with your statement and the fact of 21 grams of sugar? Why not recommend use of Stevia or Splenda to blunt the glycemic impact of the sugar? That's why I opened with remarking about ADA joining 21st Century.

If your approach of recommending so called "balanced" meals with high refined carbohydrates worked, why the present epidemic of obesity and diabetes? Healthier choices would be low carb/low glycemic offerings!

People with diabetes have to realize that they have to limit their carb intakes. All we have to do is test with our blood testing meters to see the jump in blood sugars 2 to 3 hours after eating ADA recommended recipes.

low carb diet

My type 2 diabetes was out of control 400 plus in the mornings. I was eating low fat products such as yogurt and milk and could not get the sugar levels to budge. My doctor was filling me up with nine pills aday that did nothing but give me diarrhea. He told me to go get some fiber from the pharmacy. He was indignant that I would question him about all these pills. My sister sent me to a Health Practioner and I explained my sitution he ordered a lot of blood test. I was so intolerent from all the carbs I was eating that the fat in my liver was causing cholestrols of over 400..He put me on the low carb diet with supplements to get my Zinc and Vit-D back. I was so deficient. It's been three weeks now and the glucose in the mornings are in the 180's and 160's. Iam taking just one diabetic pill in the mornings, Lost 5 Lbs. I work out 4 times a week with cardio and weights.. Watch out for hidden sugars in Low Fat products and the high carbs in cereal and fruit. I eat an egg with a little whole fat cheese in the morning with a couple slices of Canadian Bacon. High Protien with a little fat is much better than low fat any day..
