Aids for Insulin Users

For some people, injecting insulin is no big deal. But that’s not true for everyone. Problems with vision or dexterity—sometimes as a result of diabetic complications—can make handling syringes, vials, and insulin pens difficult. Anxiety about needles is another barrier, especially among children.

Fortunately, there are several products that are designed to help people with diabetes take their insulin. These items can make managing diabetes somewhat easier for those with special needs. Some aids, for example, help steady a vial of insulin so that it’s easier to draw the liquid into a syringe. Others magnify the markings on a syringe or the display on an insulin pump screen to ensure that someone with poor vision can read them—and get the right amount of insulin.

The chart includes icons that show whether these aids help with vision or dexterity problems, or anxiety about using needles. (Some of the products can help with more than one issue and so have multiple icons on the chart in the link above.) Your doctor, nurse, or diabetes educator may also have useful advice about what aids would work best with your care regimen and even have sample products you can try out.

In need of diabetic supplies

I am unemployed, no insurance and I am in the process of applying for SSA disability benefits. Unfortunately the process takes time, meanwhile, my husband is on disability and that is the only income we have coming in. I have not been able to check my blood glucose for over a month. I know that this is dangerous. I did get assistance with my Lantus Solostar Pen insulin through Sanofi-Aventis, the manufacturer of this type of insulin. I really don't know which way to turn at this point.
I located in Missouri and there are very few places to get any kind of assistance. Have to have Medicare to get any pharmacy or diabetic supplies.
If anyone can help. Please e-mail me @ bcowick52@yahoo.com.
Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

TINY AIR BUBBLES IN INSULIN DOSAGE

A DIABETIC TEACHER REALLY IMPRESSED MY TYPE 1 DIABETIC BROTHER OF THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING THE AIR BUBBLES OUT OF HIS INSULIN BEFORE HE INJECTS. HE HAS FOR YEARS WORRIED AND FRETTED OVER THE TINIEST SPECK OF AN AIR BUBBLE. NOW, AS HE AGES, THE LITTLE BUBBLES ARE GETTING HARDER AND HARDER TO SEE. I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS:
1. I KNOW LARGE BUBBLES TAKE UP SPACE IN THE SYRINGE AND CAN CAUSE ONE TO RECIEVE A SMALLER DOSE THAN PRESCIRBED, BUT IS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO GET THE NEAR MICROSCOPIC BUBBLES OUT?
2. IS THERE A MAGNIFYING DEVICE THAT COULD HELP HIM SEE IF THERE ARE ANY BUBBLES IN HIS DOSE OF INSULIN IN THE SYRINGE.

Magnifier

Wal-Mart & Meijer sell a magnifier that clips onto a syringe.

novolin r and n

the novolin r and n innolet work ideally for my mother who also has macular degeneration however she has heard they are being discontinued. Just wondering if that was nation wide or just in our area. If they would still be available somewhere through the internet that would be great if not we are open to any suggestions for what else would work as good. The pen is not working so great for her. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Penny L
