Why Is My Blood Glucose So High in the Morning?

I am puzzled by my blood sugar pattern. I am not on any medications. My morning fasting blood sugar is always the highest of the day—between 120 and 140 mg/dl. The rest of
the day it is in the normal range. Why does this occur?
Ruth Reynolds, Elk Grove, Calif.

Christy Parkin, MSN, RN, CDE, responds: In the early morning hours, hormonal changes in your body will naturally cause blood glucose to rise. For people who don't have diabetes, the increase in blood glucose is offset by increased insulin production. For people with diabetes, this can be a problem.

There are a couple of things going on that make your glucose rise in the morning. One of these is insulin resistance—a condition that means your body's muscle and fat cells are
unable to use insulin effectively to lower blood glucose. However, insulin resistance also affects how your liver processes, stores, and releases sugar, particularly at night. The liver is supposed to release small amounts of glucose when you're not eating. But in type 2 diabetes, the liver dumps more glucose than is needed into the bloodstream, especially at night. So, while your hormones are causing a natural rise in blood glucose, your liver is releasing even more sugar into your system. And because your insulin resistance prevents your muscle and fat cells from using the sugar, your blood glucose level rises.

Unlike mealtime blood glucose, which can be somewhat controlled by diet and exercise, high fasting blood glucose usually needs to be treated with medication. You should talk to your doctor about medications that can help you obtain good control. You may also want to read our September 2008 story "Rocky Morning Highs."

High blood sugar level

Hello,
I'm border line diebetic and I've noticed that my blood sugar level is higher now in the morning than it use to be. It use to be 65-85 now I'm at 80-110. Why is this and how can I continue to prevent being diebetic.

Check your blood sugar

Check your blood sugar around 2 to 3 o'clock in the morning that should be able to tell you if you one of the two effects that sometimes can occur with diabetics.

You could have the Dawn effects in which your blood sugar will rise during the night and stay high or, the simogy effects in which yor sugar will drop to low and then rise up again.

Checking your sugars at 2 or 3 in the morning could tell you which of these you have and treat accordingly. There is no one answer and the only one that can tell you what is going on is your MD but having your night blood sugar number can help him/her decide which way is best.

What damage can it do ?

My fathers reading was above 400 on Monday but tonight on Tuesday he was down to 340. How long does it take for a body like my 73 year old father to be down by 100?

Diabetes

Once you have diabetes, do you always have diabetes?

The practical answer is yes.

The practical answer is yes. However, depending on causes, diabetes can still be cured or slowed down in progression.

How soon after eating to test?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabete just before leaving on an extended trip. My doctor gave me Metformin HCL to take once per day and told me to test my blood and keep the number between 60 and 200, but she didn't tell me when to test. I've been guessing that 1 hour after eating is a good time and this gave me good readings between 75 and 140. However, today I decided to try testing right after eating breakfast and my number was 243! I immediately went outside and race walked around and got down to 219 after 15 minutes and down to 150 after another 15 minutes. My breakfast consisted of whole grain cereal with skim milk, 1/2 banana and some low fat youghert.
I don't know if this is a problem or not. How soon after a meal should I test? Was my breakfast a bad choice? Should I test immediately after eating so that I see that my blood sugar is too high?

How soon after eating to test etc.

You should test your blood sugar in the morning before breakfast-'fasting blood sugar'.
Goal is usually 90-140. After meal testing should be done 2-3 hours after, 1 hour is too soon because it takes
2 hours usually to leave the stomach. Blood sugar after meals should be less than 180.
If higher than that, you need to reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat.
Take a look at the Nutrition Facts Label on food packages-serving size & Total Carbohydrates.
1 serving is 15 grams. Diabetic women should eat 30-45 grams of carbohydrates per meal, men
45-60 grams per meal. 15 grams is considered a snack.
AM fasting sugar is related to how much stored glucose(sugar) is released from your liver overnight.
Blood sugars done during the day or at bedtime reflect foods containing carbohydrates eaten during the
day or evening.
Hope this is helpful!
